When I was in Portland, I made friends With Derek, whose house I was staying at.

This guy is pretty rad for a bunch of reasons, but the one I’m excited about this very second is the zine shop he opened up in North Portland with his pal Alex Wrekk (of Stolen Sharpie Revolution fame), called the Portland Button Works!

Seriously, a store dedicated to zines, where you can also make your own buttons?

I know, it’s a lot of awesome, hard to handle it all at once. Take a breather if you need. Then go check them out here, or else in real life, if you happen to live in that city.

(other reasons Derek is awesome are his zine All Things Ordinary, and the soda pop review website he runs with some friends, called Thirsty Dudes. Both worth checking out.)

My Love Affair with Zines (And Portland)

For my second post on the PDXX Collective blog, I wrote about the “zine scene” in Portland. I am really excited to keep writing about different aspects of the zine community here. <3

A friendly visit to the Portland Button Works shop in a photoset!

If you’re in the Rose City and have a chance to check out Portland Button Works, you’ll be in for a treat. I went there with Nicole and Alana this past June and had a blast making—and bungling, but Derek was patient with me!—our own “SHRINK ALL MEN” buttons. Alex and Derek also have pre-made buttons and magnets for sale, so I scooped up a handful of those. They deal in zines, too (no surprise there), so I consigned five of my zines and bought a ton of new and old favorites, like the latest Telegram, Burn Collector, and that Rum-Muffel split. It’s exciting that a space like this exists, and I’m glad I had a chance to support them while I was in town.

!!!

yay!

I just re-stocked my etsy store with all my most recent zines. Check it out if you’re interested. Year One is in there too.

Ramsey is an amazing artist, and an even more amazing person. If you have never read her comics/zines I highly recommend you checking them out. They are smart and funny and informative and easy to get lost in.
